What makes a cover-up work

Three rules artists use β€” the generator follows them too.

01

Go darker, not lighter

Light ink can't hide dark ink. Cover-ups lean on black, deep shading and saturated colour placed right over the old lines.

02

Size up a little

A cover-up is usually 2–3Γ— the size of the original so the new design has room to absorb it without looking forced.

03

Choose organic shapes

Petals, feathers, waves and fur hide old outlines far better than straight lines, lettering or empty negative space.

Cover-up questions

Do cover-up tattoos actually work?

Yes β€” a skilled artist and the right design can fully hide most old tattoos. Darker, denser designs cover best, which is why black & grey dominates cover-ups.

Is the AI cover-up generator free?

Guests can try 2 designs a day. Sign in for 8 a day. A plan raises that to 40 a day so you can compare options before you book.

What's the difference between Full cover and Rework & extend?

Full cover hides the old tattoo completely under a new design. Rework & extend keeps the parts you still like β€” sharpening faded lines, fixing uneven shading and adding new elements around them. Rework is often smaller and cheaper; full cover is the answer when the old piece has to go.

How much does a cover-up tattoo cost?

Usually more than a fresh tattoo of the same size, because it needs more ink, more planning and often a bigger design. Planning the design first keeps studio time down.

Can I cover a name or an ex's name?

Absolutely β€” names are one of the most common cover-ups. Lettering is best hidden by floral, black & grey or ornamental designs that break up the straight lines.

Can any tattoo be covered?

Most can. Very dark or very large old tattoos may need a bigger, bolder design β€” or a few laser sessions to fade them first. Your artist will tell you which.

Do I still need a tattoo artist?

Yes. The generator gives you realistic directions and a stencil to bring to your consult; a professional artist adapts it to your skin and tattoos it.
